LYMAN — The Bridger Valley Pioneer Days celebration in Lyman pays tribute to July 24, 1847, when the Mormon Pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley, according to chair Tony Gillies.
Bridger Valley’s Pioneer Days is boasted as the largest celebration of this date outside the state of Utah, where it is a state holiday known as the “Days of ’47.”
This year’s theme for the Valley’s celebration is “Courage Through the Years,” Gillies said Tuesday morning, and recognizes the changes in the area as the hands of time have ticked onward.
The Pioneer Days celebration in Lyman is held on the weekend closest to July 24, and this year it falls on this weekend. It kicked off last night with a cowboy poetry/western music concert at the Lyman High School PAC.
The weekend is full of a many events. Today’s activities include the start of a co-ed softball tournament, which will culminate tomorrow.
Tomorrow, Saturday, is a day with a full schedule of events starting with a flag raising at 7 a.m. at the LDS Church on Main Street in Lyman.
The parade will kick off at 10 a.m. following the line up at Homestead Village at 9 a.m. And what is a celebration without food? A niche answered by the barbecue at the Lyman rodeo grounds at 11 a.m. The cost is $5 per plate.
