County candidates built cases for election

Primary Election Tuesday, Aug. 21

LYMAN — The second forum for candidates seeking a shot in the general election in November and featuring offices for Uinta County was held Tuesday night at the Lyman Town Hall.

Candidates for the contested offices – County Commission, Sheriff’s Office and Assessor’s Office – were on hand to inform the large crowd of their qualifications and ability to do the job. Incumbents had a distinct advantage as some of the questions included what they would do in the job, plus how they would change things for the better. Panacea items such as more funding for the library was a prime topic as was equality and treatment of the east and west side of the county.

Incumbent commissioners Wendell Fraughton and Eric South agreed there had been problems with the funding of the library, but both noted they had worked through the system and declining budgets and all areas had received cutbacks, not just the library. At the present, the county mill levy for the library was set at 1 mill.

Both commissioners said they had been able to keep from dipping in the county’s reserve and kept the county operating. The reserve is set aside in case of some major problem so the county has funds to dip into for operation.

As for fair and adequate treatment of the two sides of the county, no mention was made of the new grant funding the county received with Lincoln County to do a study on economic development. At this point, to this reporter’s knowledge, there has been no inclusion of the eastern side of the county in the stories reporting economic development for the county.

For the most part, all candidates in all areas of the forum talked about their long-term connections to Uinta County. In addition, they all expressed an interest in serving and doing what is best for the county.

Although they are both incumbents and they are running unopposed, Amanda Hutchinson, Uinta County Clerk, and Terry Brimhall, county treasurer, spoke about their duties in office and why they were seeking reelection to another four-year term. Both are Republicans and will be unopposed in the general election.
