LHS soccer team hangs up cleats, finished season on ‘good note’

Lyman aces a shutout and notched first win of school history

LYMAN — The Lyman soccer team ended their season with a high note playing Green River at home and had some really good matches this year, according to head coach Ken Peterson Tuesday.

Against Green River, the girl's team fought hard and had a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, they couldn't manage to hold the lead and ended up losing 6-2. The boys played hard and ended up scoring three goals, but they also gave up five goals and the final was 5-3.

The boys then played a few days later at home against Lander. Nothing seemed to go right for the boys as they lost 8-0. The following day, the teams were up early for a road game to Riverton.

The girl's team had no substitute, and the day was extremely hot, especially on the turf field. They fought hard, but they just couldn't keep up and lost 7-0. The boys played right after and the weather cooled off slightly, but the turf itself was still hot. The first half, the boys controlled the ball and the tempo. They had many opportunities to score, but didn't find the back of the net in the first half. At halftime, it was still 0-0.

In the second half, Isaac Gull got a nice pass from Wyatt Anderson down the left side of the field. Gull turned the ball back in towards the middle and shot it. It deflected off a Riverton defender and found the back of the net, Lyman went up 1-0.

Riverton fought back and attacked trying to tie up the game, but the Lyman defense held strong and played amazingly great, Peterson said. Both Carter Huntsman and Carson Walker combined for the first shutout in school history, as well as the first win in school history as the Eagles won 1-0.

After the victory, the Eagles played one more game in Pinedale. The girl's team played strong, however, they couldn't manage to get much past the Pinedale defense. The girls ended up losing 7-1 with the lone goal coming from Alina Kamenz in her last game as an Eagle.

The boys struggled against Pinedale in the first half and went down 5-0 at the half. The second half was a completely different game, where the boys attacked and keep possession. Braxton Sabey scored a Brace (term for two goals in soccer) and Lyman ended up losing 6-2 in the final.

“The season showed good progression for the kids,” Peterson said. “They fought hard in the games and really got better as the season went on. The coaches would like to thank the parents and fans for their support throughout the season.”
