LYMAN — The MVHS Buffalos came and rolled over the LHS Eagles at their Homecoming game last Friday.
Turned the day into a “Oh, No,” for the Eagles as they would have preferred to put their Homecoming game in the win column. But, the Eagles probably expected they would be subjected to the loss, as the Buffs have basically been unstoppable this year.
Following the game, the Buffs are still on the top in the west and in the 2A conference boasting a 6-0, 4-0, overall and conference, record. This loss put the Eagles record at 3-4, 3-3.
Currently Big Piney is in the #2 slot for the West, followed by Lovell, Lyman, Pinedale, Greybull and Kemmerer. Kemmerer is still winless.
Today the Eagles play at Greybull and Mountain View at Kemmerer.
As for the top seed in 2A, if Mountain View beats Kemmerer this week, the Buffs lock up the top seed. If, by a slim chance, the Buffs would lose to Kemmerer, and the right teams win, it could force a tiebreaker.
The Lyman Eagles play at Greybull today and host Big Piney next week.
The day last Friday for Lyman’s Homecoming game was a perfect fall day, not too brisk, lots of sun and basically very little breeze. In the pre-game interview, MVHS head coach Brent Walk talked about the big numbers in stats the Buffs were making. LHS head coach Dale Anderson talked about his team’s dedication and their work on the field.
With the game’s kickoff, the Eagles received, but the Buffs held them to minimal yardage and the Eagles had to punt on the fourth. The Eagles defense came out ready to play, squared up and held the Buffs to four downs on their first possession.
Both defenses were firing on all cylinders and keeping the other from making plays for a major portion of the first quarter. With 3:39 remaining in the first quarter, the Buffs connected with a pass for long yardage and the ball was carried in for a TD. It was sweetened by a PAT by kicker Teancum Piekkola. A field goal following a second touchdown by the Buffs gave Mountain View a 13-0 lead with 2:13 left in the first.
Refs weren’t picky as they handed out penalties following yellow flags on the field. Both Lyman and Mountain View shared in the honors.
In the fourth, Braxton Bradshaw made the biggest offensive play for the Eagles as he was able to move the ball to the 39 yard line. Then the ball was moved to the 27, but the Eagles were held and couldn’t capitalize on the progress of these plays.
With 1:30 left in the game, the Buffs snapped the ball and took a knee. Game over and one for the record books.
The Eagles are on the cusp of being able to play in a play-off game with their 3-3 record. A team has to win four out of seven games to earn the privilege.
