Morgan Utah Invitational, good backdrop for MVHS track team to score and improve

Posted

MORGAN, Utah — A warm morning welcomed a hoard of athletes to the Morgan High School track April 21, for the 11th annual Morgan Pocket Change Invitational track meet.

The athletes represented schools from Utah and Wyoming in classification from 1A to 5A.

Mountain View was one of five Wyoming teams to tie on their shoes and compete at the big track meet at Morgan, Utah. The other Wyoming teams included Rock Springs, Green River, Kemmerer and Farson-Eden. And, the MVHS tracksters once again proved they are a force with which to be reckoned.

As luck and drive would have it, the Morgan boys team aced their home meet and took first with a score of 72.5. Rock Springs scored 65 points and pulled down third place. The MVHS Buffalos turned in an extremely respectable score of 54 to take fifth place out of the 22 boys teams competing at the meet.

As for the girls events, Layton took first with a score of 94. Rock Springs was back in third with a score of 64. The ladies of MVHS took ninth with 37 points, out of 21 teams, which competed on the field.

As for overall team scores, Layton took first with a score of 155.5. The two MVHS teams – Lady Buffs and Buffs – had a combined score of 91, taking fifth place out of the 26 schools, which competed at the Morgan Invitational.

“Morgan was great,” according to head track and field coach Joel Giorgis.

“We are just heading down the home stretch,” Giorgis added. “We have a big Invitational this week at Davis then next week our home meet, then the BYU Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Then it is into regionals.

“We are just were we want to be at this time. We have some kids fighting some injuries, but they should be healthy and ready for our regional meet.” Giorgis said.

The MVHS track team has had several athletes prequalified from the onset of the season for the state track meet in Casper on May 17-18. According to Giorgis, more have qualified from recent meets. As he started to list the new ones, he broke in on his thoughts as said, “A second thought, we have seven girls and 12 boys who have prequalified for state already.”

Earlier Giorgis had predicted vaulter Harlan Benedict who clipped the school record by an inch when he sailed 14.1, that Benedict would go much higher. According to Giorgis, at the recent meet in Evanston, Benedict vaulted 15-0 feet and now holds the highest vault in the state.
