MVHS Lady Buffs, state consolation champs

Posted

CASPER — Small, but mighty is how MVHS head coach appraised the Lady Buffs after their play at the state tournament last week in Casper.

Moretti posted on We Are MV, “THIS TEAM. I am beyond proud of their work ethic, commitment to excellence and true grit! Although we showed up at the state tournament as the smallest team in stature, no other team has the size of heart that these girls do! We are bringing hardware home, Mountain View girls are the consolation champions!”

Going in as the #2 W seed, and facing #3 E seed Buffalo, the Buffalos knew they had their work cut out for them, according to Moretti’s comments last week prior to their first game at the tournament. Moretti’s comments at that time were, “We have a tough match up with Buffalo right off the bat. We will need to hit the ground running to ensure the win against them. We did lose to them at the East-West Challenge by five points in January after a three-week break. Hopefully, at this point in the season, we can put the pressure on them necessary to get the win.”

But as the overall action of the game loomed in the Lady Bisons favor, the Lady Bison handed the MVHS Lady Buffs a nine-point loss. The Bison were off and running in the first quarter outscoring Mountain View by seven points. The score at the end of the first was 10-3.

As the game looked more promising, Buffalo came back with renewed vigor in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bison more than doubled the points put in by the Lady Buffs as the Bison nailed 24 points compared to Mountain View’s 11 giving the game to the Lady Bison, by nine, 51-42.

The loss sent Mountain View to the back bracket where they faced Lander Valley. True to the two games played during the regular season, Mountain View sent Lander Valley packing with a 23-point-loss for a final score of 46-23.

The next battle was against the Lady Outlaw of Rawlins for the consolation title. Prior to the state tournament, Rawlins had been one of the teams that was to make a presence at the tournament. Mountain View played a tough game but took the win by two, 41-39, to take the consolation title.
