MVHS’ Moretti tapped to lead South Team for the girls basketball All Stars

CASPER — MVHS head basketball coach Jessica Moretti has received a second honor following the end of this year’s season when the state basketball tournament was cancelled due to the spread of coronavirus.

Moretti, who had recently been named the 3A Girls West Coach of the Year following leading her team, the Lady Buffs, to the 3A regional championship at the tournament in Lyman, was on the cusp of something, which could have been much bigger, at the state tournament. But as the wheels of life turn, sometimes life deals a blow to plans and expectations. And one such blow occurred when the Lady Buffs hit a roadblock in the Rawlins area when they were told the state tournament had been cancelled. They were scheduled to play their first game Thursday night, but concerns over the tournament being a breeding and ground for spreading COVID-19, officials deemed it necessary to stop the tournament. The bus was turned around and the team returned to Mountain View. The cancellation proved to be a let-down for all teams headed to the tournament, but the WHSAA deemed the health of the athletes, parents, refs and everyone concerned was of utmost importance.

As a tribute to Moretti’s ability to lead her team, she has been named the head coach of the girls South Basketball team for the game that will be played later this summer.

Earlier Moretti traced her involvement with MVHS girls basketball. She told the Pioneer, “I have been in the Mountain View girls program for 13 years, 10 years as an assistant coach and the last three years being the head coach.”

Moretti said Wednesday afternoon, “Yes, it was pretty exciting news to find out that I had been selected as the Head Coach for the 2020 All Star game this summer.

The South team plays against a team from comprised of players who are from schools in the North. Both rosters are filled with the most recent seniors.

“I am very honored to have been given this opportunity by my peers,” Moretti said. “I am even more excited to be able to offer a fun and competitive last and final game for all of those seniors who missed out on their state basketball tournament this year. I am looking forward to meeting and coaching each athlete, in what will be most of the girls' last and final game of their careers.”
