BIG PINEY — The MVHS track team competed at the Pete Olson Memorial at Big Piney last Wed, March 21, and took second place in the combined scores of the men’s and women’s teams.

The two teams racked up a combined total of 243.333 points, bowing only to host school Big Piney, which took first with a score of 271.5. The men’s team was in first place following the conclusion of the men’s competition.

Wyoming teams participating at the Pete Olsen included Big Piney, Pinedale, Jackson, Green River, Mountain View, Lyman and Farson-Eden. Farson-Eden fell to the bottom slot with 89.5 points.

MVHS was originally slated to compete at the Davis Super last week on Tuesday and again on Wednesday. The ladies did make it to Kaysville on Tuesday, but the guys were pulled as the Big Piney meet was moved to Wednesday from Friday due to predictions of bad weather.

Both MVHS teams performed well on the field and track at Big Piney with several first place finishes at Big Piney.

For the Buffs, Mason Ozuna, junior, earned two first place finishes with his ability to soar through the air. He took first in the triple jump with a distance of 41-10.50 feet and first in the long jump with 19-06.50, adding 20 points to the Buffs score. Two other teammates performed well in these events and earned places on the podium and points for the team. Luke Branson took seventh in the triple jump with a 36-01.75, and Ashton Schofield took fifth in the long jump with 18-02.00. Both athletes are freshman.

As for the vaulters, none of the schools could compete with Mountain View. The Buffs laid claim to both first and second with two seniors up and over in the air. They were top vaulters last year and have added to their ability to pole over the bar. Harlan Benedict took first with a 13-07.00 feet, and Brandon Vitt took second with 12-07.00, which was a foot higher than the third place vaulter from Jackson. In addition, MVHS vaulter Dustin Smith earned points in this event, taking fifth place with a 11-01.00.

Valley power throwers also owned a piece of the discus competition with three Valley throwers tying for second place.

As for the Lady Buffs, they did get a shot at the Davis Super last week. Although they didn’t ace their events, they gained valuable experience going into this year’s season competition in state.

The one who turned in the best record at Davis was Meisha Lawrence who is a senior. She took eighth place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.88 and earning a point for the ladies.

MVHS has ladies who are perfecting their skim of the hurdles. In the 300 meter hurdles, Kelsey Giorgis took first with a time of 52.28, beating the second place time of 54.3. Giorgis also tied for sixth place with another MVHS hurdler, Meisha Lawrence, in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.57. The top time turned in for MVHS in this event was by Haylee Hereford, taking second place, with a time of 16.97.

Distance runner Charity Harmon again sped to the front of the 1600. She took second place with a time of 5:51.00, missing tying for first by one second.
