PINEDALE — Both varsity MVHS basketball teams have been on a learning curve and focusing on the game-of-the-day as they played throughout the season, according to their head coaches.
Although both teams went in as the #2S seed, tournaments provide a clean slate for all teams. The MVHS teams were pumped up and ready, but both suffered some hard knocks at the 3A West regional tournament last week in Pinedale and closed out their seasons at the tournament.
The Cody Broncs, #2N, flexed their muscles and took the championship in a game against Riverton. The Buffs went up against the Lander Valley Tigers, #3, in their first game of the tournament last week on Thursday. Mountain View was back on the hardwood last Friday and faced the Riverton Wolverines, #1N.
This sent the Buffs into the consolation bracket to face the Pinedale Wranglers. Lady Luck raised her head, and the Wranglers were hot-off-a-win over Powell and were determined to win again, with an added bonus of home-court advantage. And, win they did, handing the Buffs a loss by five points.
“I would like to thank our seniors, Jason Stoddard and Brandon Vitt, for their commitment and leadership this year,” head coach Dustin Rees said. “Those boys did an amazing job and were the leaders of our team. They will be missed by their teammates and by the coaching staff,” Rees concluded.
Lady Buffs
The Lady Buffs also took a clipping at the tournament last week. Head coach Jessica Moretti said Wednesday, “At the end of the regional tournament, we were very disheartened about the outcome. When it comes down to it, our shooting percentages struggled from where they were the entire regular season. It unfortunately, just wasn't our weekend.”
In the consolation bracket, the Lady Buffs took a win over Pinedale. This put the Lady Buffs up one more game on the climb to play for a chance to go to state. As luck would have it, the Lady Buffs faced the Lyman Lady Eagles, #1S, for the third time this year, and the Lady Eagles handed the Lady Buffs a loss, 46-38, ending the season for the Lady Buffs.
