MVHS varsity teams aced last weekend’s play

Posted

MOUNTAIN VIEW — The MVHS varsity basketball teams, dug in their heels, lowered their heads and powered over their opponents last weekend and aced their basketball games.

Four games played. Four wins notched. One with a buzzer ending basket by Hunter Meeks for the Buffalos to snatch the win and keep from going into overtime with the Pinedale Wrangles in the Pinedale arena, 54-52.

Today, the two teams are on the hardcourt in Saratoga against the 1A Panthers. The Panthers look to be a solid competitor as they sport a conference record of 1-1, but have padded their overall, 8-3. The Lady Panthers have a less impressive record and aren’t expected to be as much competition. They have a conference record of 0-2, and an overall of 3-8.

MVHS Buffalos

“We have marked great improvement every game since a lopsided loss to Buffalo during the Rawlins tournament,” head coach Dustin Rees said Monday afternoon. “I feel like after the Buffalo loss, we really came together as a team. We began playing great team basketball, and our confidence has grown as a result of it.

“We have also stressed our defense as the most important aspect of our team,” Rees added. “We feel like if we play great defense, we get better shots out of the offense, and we give ourselves a chance to win every game.”

Last week’s game against the Pinedale Wranglers was definitely not a walk-in-the-park. Rees said the team struggled, but the outcome was at the buzzer. Meeks short-shot sailed through the rim and turned the game into the Buffs favor.

MVHS Lady Buffs

The MVHS Lady Buffs turned their perfect overall record of 6-0 into an almost identical record of wins and losses when their overall was 6-5, although most of the loses were against 4A teams. But the Lady Buffs have again reinvented themselves, notched two conference wins last weekend, and are getting set to hit the rest of the season running up their win record.

“After a long break, we had a hard time getting the rhythm of our game back,” head coach Jessica Moretti said late Tuesday. “Although we had some close games with some very good teams, we just couldn't get the job done on the offensive side of the game.”

The Lady Buffs earned both wins last week against Pinedale’s Lady Wranglers and Big Piney’s Lady Punchers by lopsided final scores. The Lady Buffs handed the Lady Wranglers a 20 point loss, 51-31. They also handed the Lady Punchers a 48 point loss, 59-11.

“After this last weekend, we entered into conference play, and we were able to take care of both Pinedale and Big Piney, it felt good for all of us to get back to Mountain View basketball,” Moretti said
