CASPER — The matmen for the high school teams are on their own and they must produce by themselves when they go face-to-face on the mat against an opponent.

And, the crew for both schools were on the spot at the 3A state wrestling tournament last weekend in Casper. The tournament was held at the Ford Wyoming Center, which was previously known as the Casper Events Center.

Buses came, athletes filed off, and they faced the competition on the mat.

As a side note, both Mountain View and Lyman had claimed the state championship years ago when they were both classes as 2A schools. Mountain View took the title in 1976 and Lyman in 1988. Progress, both schools grew and now they hit the mat as 3A teams.

As for the 3A, reports were Star Valley’s sixth consecutive Class 3A state wrestling title was in doubt heading into the semifinals Friday. The Braves had eight wrestlers in the semis but trailed Douglas 96-86 in the points race. The Bearcats’ lead didn’t last long, however. Star Valley won all three head-to-head matches against Douglas in the semifinals and sent six wrestlers through to the finals compared to just one for the Bearcats. That proved to be the difference as Star Valley finished with 228 points to 202 for Douglas. Worland was third with 165.5, followed by Green River with 148 and Pinedale with 135.

Results for the MVHS Buffalos included Tanner Collins taking second in the 138 and scoring 24.0 team points. He earned this shot by winning a fall over Mauriccio Grimaldo, Wheatland. He won by a fall in the quarter final over Conor Manlove of Burns/Pine Bluffs, and another fall in the semifinal over Keltan Ewing of Douglas. Colllins went up against Cody Phelps of Pinedale for the championship and Phelps won by a tech fall.

Bodey Fraughton wrestled in the 160 and lost by a fall in his first round. He was sent to the consolation side of the bracket and lost two more matches by falls. He did score three team points for the Buffalos.

Daniel Harris lost his first match in the 170 by a fall. He went into the consolation bracket and lost two more matches by falls.

Mark Walker took fourth place in the 182. Walker has been tough throughout the season and he added 16 points for the Buffalos at the state meet. He won his first match by a fall over Ty Harris of Worland. In the quarterfinal he, won by a fall over Koby Case of Douglas. Back on the mat in the semifinal, Walker was bested by Jack Sweeney of Lander who took the match by a fall. Walker was again on the mat to wrestle in the consolation semi-final against Ralph Moreno of Worland and took the match by a decision 8-3. This put Walker in the round for third and fourth where he wrestled Keaton Stone of Cody and Stone won the match by a major decision over Walker, MD 13-5.

Three more wrestlers were on the mat for MVHS at the state tourney. They were Colter Bindl in the 195. He lost both matches by falls

Trevor Condos, in the 220, lost his first match by a decision and his second match by a major decision.
