Primary Election bankrolls some new candidates for general election

BRIDGER VALLEY — Tuesday’s Primary Election in Uinta County changed the scenery on some of the seats pertinent for residents of Uinta County.

On the state and county level, there was a flock of new candidates challenging current office holders. Just over 52 percent of eligible voters cast votes in Uinta County. As for the breakdown, nearly 88 percent of registered Republicans cast ballots compared to just over 10 percent of the Democrats. Less than two percent non-partisan ballots were cast.

In HD 19, which is a prime seat for Bridger Valley, Danny Eyre has served one term and was challenged by Karl Allred of the Hilliard area. Eyre, a Lyman resident, handily held on to his seat on the GOP ticket taking 72 percent of the vote compared to Allred’s 28 percent.

In the state senate, incumbent Paul Barnard was challenged by several for the spot on the GOP primary ballot in Senate District 15. Evanston’s Wendy Schuler received the most votes, taking 35 percent compared to second place Shaun Sims 25 percent. Barnard was in third place with 642 votes.

On the race for the seats on the county commission, one will stay and one will go. Commissioners Eric South and Wendell Fraughton are completing their first terms. South currently serves as the commission chair and is an Evanston area resident. He gathered enough votes to be one of two GOP candidates for the general election earing 27.3 percent of the vote. Fraughton was in third place with 21.95 percent of the votes. Newcomer Mark Anderson of Evanston beat out Fraighton by a little less than 400 votes as Anderson received 26.29 percent of the votes.

A second contested county race was the one for Uinta County Sheriff. It included two challengers to incumbent Dough Matthews – Randy Chandler and Dennis S. Hutchinson. Matthews edged out Chandler by over 500 votes and Hutchinson by over 800 votes. Matthews has served one term as the county sheriff.

As for the Primary Election on the Democrat tickets, most fields were without candidates. Bridger Valley rancher David Tanner ran for one of the seats on the county commission. He received 439 votes or 44.7 percent of the registered voters.

Lyman mayor Bronson Berg ran unopposed and Tansy Shelton and Andrew Spray ran unopposed. Spray currently sits on the council, and Shelton will assume the seat of Jana Condos when her term ends at the end of the year.

There will be no changes on the council in Mountain View. Bryan Ayres and Jacob Rex Porter retained their seats. Sarah Butters had run for one of the two positions open for election but didn’t succeed to make it into the general election.
