The weather recently has been a real — — unbelievable

Posted

Seasons come and seasons go, but as the political cartoon that ran in the Pioneer a couple of weeks ago, ‘Mother Nature is stuck in winter.’

The birds sing in the morning, and the sun is hotter, but it is going to take some time for the snow pack to thin a little.

Wednesday morning, following the two previous ones, was also definitely a little cool, not the cool type of a “hip guy strolling along snapping his fingers,” but a real cool – temperature wise.

And the fog, not a normal condition for this area. As one person recently told me, ‘if I am going to be in fog like this, I might as well go to England,’ a country notoriously know for fog.

And, the fog has definitely been weird. Often leaving Fort Bridger in sunshine, going up the dugway west of Urie and hitting fog and white trees. At times, the fog didn’t start until the Urie intersection. And Lyman – hmm – it’s probably had the most of the areas in the Valley. It has looked many times like a snow globe Christmas village with its white trees, while the rest of the area hasn’t had any white trees.

Usually, at this time of year, the daffodils are beginning to poke up and break through the ground while the trees are forming buds. This year, at least at my house, the snow is deep enough the daffodils can’t break the surface. And the buds on the trees look, well, they aren’t there yet.

Ranchers, townspeople and many others have been plowing snow as is attested to by the massive snow piles everywhere you look. Fields have to be opened up for the calving season. And ranchers are noting the loss of calves due to the weather.

Technically, Wednesday, March 20, was the first day of spring. How did your day greet you?

The moon Wednesday night was considered a Super Worm Moon. It will be the first super moon to occur during the March equinox in 19 years. Why that name? Well, it is supposed to that's the time of year when earth worms tend to emerge from the ground as it begins to thaw from the departing cold of winter. Oh really, possible this year? They crawled out of the ground and up through the snow to get a peak at the moon? Mother Nature, what are you doing?
