Valley high school cross country teams to race at regional meet

Posted

BRIDGER VALLEY — The cross county teams from Lyman High School and Mountain View High School competed in their last regular season meet last Friday in Rock Springs.

Like all sports, the season comes to an end and the teams power up for the final two competitions at regionals and state. This week is the do-or-die week for the cross country teams as runners try to up the ante with their best times before heading to the state meet in Star Valley on Oct. 26.

Earlier, it was predicted Star Valley would get a leg up on the state meet as they are hosting the meet and will have the home court advantage. Last season Jackson ended the Braves’ six-year title reign. With the season’s ultimate race in their backyard, perhaps the Braves can reassert themselves atop the pecking order. This year Star Valley has been showing it had the mettle to take top honors.

Tough competition will definitely be on hand for the state meet as Rawlins distance runner extraordinaire Sidney Thorvaldson will be on the course. And, for the times in-state and multi-state, she most likely will be the top runner in the girls division.

This week, both Lyman and Mountain View will be at the regional meet in Lander tomorrow. Competing teams will also include Lander, Riverton, Star Valley, Jackson, Cody and Powell.

Last week’s meet on Friday in Rock Springs was tabbed the "Petey" Cross Country Invite. It was held at the White Mountain Golf Course. Teams in addition to the Valley teams included Evanston, Green River, Jackson, Lander, Manila (UT), Riverton, Rock Springs and Star Valley. Star Valley swept the two team titles.

Elena Jensen (20:11.62) of Lyman and Peter Visser (16:08.40) of Star Valley won the individual crowns. Jensen captured the girls' race by 13 seconds, while Visser won by 26 seconds.

The Valley runner to turn in the second fastest time was Katie Giorgis, MVHS, taking seventh place with a time of 20:51.03.

In the boys division, MVHS’ Travis Harmon took second place with a time of 16:34.91, 26 seconds off the heels of the first place win by Visser.

The next fastest time turned in by a Valley runner was Lyman’s Jesse Fanos in ninth place,
