POWELL — A soggy weekend played havoc at the 3A regional track meet, but the hardy athletes laced up their shoes, stepped up on the track and field and showed the spectators they were tough.
Star Valley returned to the field as the team to beat after winning both the mens and womens titles last year. On the mens side, the Braves will be going for a third straight state title. They upped their ante some at the regional meet as they took the 3A West title. This year the Star Valley ladies bowed to the ladies from the other schools. LHS jumper McKinley Bradshaw was listed by the Casper Star Tribune on Thursday as the 3A ladies athlete to watch at the state meet this week. Jack Nolin noted in his 3A preview for the girls wrote, “EVENT TO WATCH: High jump ... Lyman’s McKinley Bradshaw is the two-time defending state champ and has the class record of 5-07 in her sights.”
However, Mountain View’s vaulter Harlan Benedict competed a vault for 15 feet earlier this season. He has carried that height for the best throughout the season. If he vaults that height at the state meet, he will hold the state title.
The weather forecast Thursday morning showed Casper could be a little soggy for the state meet. It showed rain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. That could play havoc and hinder the athletes from in performing their personal bests.
The 3A west regional meet hosted by Powell set the arena for the eight west teams to do battle and strive to improve their personal bests. Valley tracksters have earned many marks through the season and had athletes for both the guys and gals on the podium. The regional meet proved to be a follow-up of how the athletes have performed this year.
