West Nile seen in Campbell County

GILLETTE (WNE) — Two horses under treatment in Campbell County tested positive for West Nile virus this week, said Dr. Marshall Kohr at Animal Medical Center.
Kohr said the horses were observed as being “wobbly on their feet.” A third horse is still being evaluated and tested for the virus.
One of the horses died because of the virus, but Kohr said that he hopes the other two will slowly continue to improve.
The three horse are unrelated and are from different parts of the county.

Kohr added in a press release that the horses are a part of a recent spike in confirmed cases in Wyoming.
There is one confirmed human case in Fremont County as well as seven confirmed diagnosis of the virus found in horses in Park, Fremont, Goshen, Sheridan and Campbell counties, according to a Wyoming News Exchange story and the Wyoming Livestock Board.
In addition, a golden eagle, a crow and a hawk have all been diagnosed with the virus, and mosquito breeding pools have been confirmed in Fremont, Hot Springs, Goshen and Natrona counties, according to the release.
Reports were also made to the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory and the Wyoming Department of Health.
West Nile is easily prevented with a safe and effective vaccine, Kohr said. Horses, humans and some birds are most susceptible to the virus, but dogs and cats can also become affected.
Kohr added that it is highly unlikely that dogs and cats will become ill.
